Our Island's Story
The island's story is one of harmony with nature. Originally home to the Māori, who valued its rich resources and deep spiritual significance, Pepin Island has long been a place where the land & sea converge in perfect balance. From the 1820s, the island was a significant site for the Ngāti Tama and other iwi (tribes). It was once the pā of the paramount chief of Tama, Te Pūoho-o-te-rangi. However, control of the island shifted away from Ngāti Tama around 1880, marking a new chapter in its history. A French explorer, Jules Dumont d'Urville, renamed the island in honour of his wife, Adèle Pépin.
The island's modern story began in 1996 when a businesswoman purchased Pepin Island. At the time, the island was overgrazed and run-down, filled with wild goats that hindered the growth of native bush. With dedication and vision, the buyer and her farm manager undertook extensive restoration efforts, including reforestation, fencing, and pest control. Their efforts earned them the prestigious Nelson Tasman Environmental Award in 2011, highlighting their commitment to revitalizing the island’s natural heritage. Our beautiful connection with Pepin Island began in 2021 when we purchased it from the former owners. Today, we continue to honour its legacy through sustainable practices and conservation efforts, ensuring that its natural beauty endures for generations to come.
